Week 1: Effective Goal Setting and Mission Statement to Achieve your Career Objectives

Establishing goals and creating a mission statement will help you maximize your career development.

Setting Goals: Let’s begin by having everyone complete these three steps.

Step 1: List an item that you don’t want in your career.

Step 2: List an item that you do want in your career.

Step 3: Write your goal statement using the SMART technique. Explain the career that you aspire to achieve. Consider your career objectives after graduation, in 5 years, and beyond.

Here is an example of a complete response.

Step 1: I don’t want a job that is routine and boring.

Step 2: I want a job that requires me to keep learning and growing.

Step 3: Within the next 1-3 years, I want a fast-paced career working as an Information Security Analyst for a global cybersecurity company with opportunities to advance to the managerial level within 5-7 years. My long-term goal is to be promoted to Chief Information Officer of a technology firm or start my own cybersecurity company.

Your Career Mission Statement:  Write a one-sentence statement of your overall career purpose for the next 5 years.

Example: My career mission statement is to continue learning and adding the necessary skills to become the best Information Security Analyst I can be and eventually take on a leadership role.

Discussion Tip: In addition to responding to the three steps for Setting Goals and writing Your Career Mission Statement, provide feedback on at least two classmates’ posts.
