52-year-old Dan

Dan is the divorced father of two adult children, ages 23 and 25. He is married for the second time, to his current wife Susan who is 54. He is currently 5’9” and weighs about 240 pounds.  He has Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.  At his last eye appointment the doctor recommended getting bifocals as his near vision/reading vision is not as good as it used to be and he is having trouble reading things.

Dan is a mechanic and it is a high stress job.  He is paid well, but puts in about 70 hours a week.  He knows that his body at times struggles to keep doing the job as his knees and joints become very stiff and sore by the end of the day from the job he is required to do.   He tries to not complain or show his pain as he is afraid that younger mechanics will be given his extra hours or is concerned his boss will think he cannot do the job anymore.  Recently, his wife Susan was in a car accident and cannot work due to the severity of her back injury from the accident.  So, when he comes home, he must then help Susan with daily routines such as bathing and he must also do most of the housework as she is unable to do it anymore.  Susan has very high medical bills now and lost her job, so Dan is the only one with an income currently.  As money is tight, they cannot pay anyone to help with the yard work or housework, so Dan must do it.

He has good relationships with his two children, but they are busy raising their own families now and so he only sees them about once a month.  He greatly enjoys his young grandkids and tries to find time to see them, but lately it has been hard.  He doesn’t want his kids to know how much he is struggling financially or physically, as he doesn’t want to burden them.  Susan also has children, but they were very angry she divorced her husband to marry Dan about ten years ago, so they no longer speak to her.
