Description

Week 8: Sustainability and Communities
Environmental sociology highlights a number of environmental challenges, including pollution, global warming, and resource depletion. These problems disproportionately affect marginalized populations and the poor. The study of social problems related to environmental degradation has led to environmentally based social movements and growing efforts to promote sustainable social practices. Portland, Oregon has made a conscious effort for the last 30 years to make drastic governmental, economic, and political decisions in order to preserve their inner city communities, farmland, and natural resources.

Identify other urban areas that have tried to create an urban growth boundary. Evaluate how successful they have been in their efforts. What else could local governments do to preserve both urban and rural life?
